A Letter From Winston Salem, NC

Dear Sir,

The people of North Carolina voted you in office because they were sure you were the man for that job. So please vote against the Civil Rights Bill.

The niggers are stepping on us now. If the Civil Rights Bill is passed they will be running over us.

Our children and grandchildren won’t have a chance. If you don’t have children think of the ones that do have and vote against the Civil Rights Bill. I would rather see the world come to an end than see my daughter married to a nigger.

So please vote against the Civil Rights Bill.

Dear Miss Hill:

This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter, and to assure you that I will continue to do everything within my power to defeat the pending civil rights proposals.

Those proposals are incompatible with the Federal system of government established by our Constitution,, and the basic economic, legal, and personal rights of all our citizens.

I am taking the liberty of enclosing a recent article by me entitled “ Freedom In Peril” which I thought you might be interested in reading.

With all kind wishes, I am

Sincerely yours,

Sam J. Ervin, Jr.

Thank you,
Rachel Hill
